The Lab Innovation Fund is Charlotte Lab School’s Annual Giving Campaign. Money raised each year will help fund many of the programs and activities that make our school special and allow us to create a truly innovative learning environment. We depend on our families, friends, and community for their support to supplement our operating budget so that we can accomplish our ambitious goals.
Gifts to this fund are unrestricted and will be invested according to school priorities. We are pleased to announce the official launch of the 2019 Lab Innovation Fund, our annual fundraising campaign. We began informally in November on #GivingTuesday, and as of March 17, we have raised $167,975 toward our $300,000 goal!
As we continue our fundraising through the spring, we hope that you will make a financial commitment to the school at a level that is personally meaningful to you. A gift of any size will have a positive impact on our community and enable us to reach our ambitious goals. This year, we are raising money to support the TOP THREE things that make being part of Lab special: Personalized Learning, Staff & Talent, and Global Readiness. As you make your donation to this year’s campaign, we hope you will think about what is most important to you and your family.
Since our founding, we have raised more than $2 million from all sources and are honored that more than 70% of our families have supported the school by making a donation. This money has been used to get our building ready, build our amazing playground, attract top-notch staff, enhance our innovative curriculum, advance our personalized learning programs, and undertake many other initiatives that enhance your child’s education.
Please consider making a gift of any size to the Lab Innovation Fund today! Your annual gift to Charlotte Lab School will help support the needs of all of our students and help ensure that we can continue to provide a unique approach to teaching and learning for your children.
DONATE SECURITIES Lab is set up to receive gifts of securities. Learn more here and contact Susannah Lund, Head of External Affairs, for more information.

Personalized Learning Fund: Lab’s emphasis on personalized and real-world learning is one of the main reasons that families tell us they have chosen to attend and stay at Lab! We provide innovative curriculum, hands-on learning, and the resources and tools necessary to make sure your child is learning at a level that is right for him/her. Your support will help us realize this vision.
Talent Fund: We don’t want to brag, but our teachers are simply the best! We are able to recruit, train, and keep our amazing and most dedicated staff thanks to the donations that you make to Lab. Without your ongoing support, we will not be able to provide competitive salaries for our faculty or offer essential professional development opportunities, ensuring our staff have the latest training and tools for 21st century learning.
Global Readiness Fund: Creating a truly integrated school—one that reflects the diversity of Charlotte’s population and prepares students for a global workplace— is not only our passion, it is what is best for all students and our future. Your donations support student and staff diversity efforts, the world language program, and cultural competency initiatives, all of which are necessary to be successful in college and career.

What is the Lab Innovation Fund?
The Lab Innovation Fund is our new annual giving campaign, which helps strengthen the educational experience for all students. While Charlotte Lab School’s core program is financially sustainable on the public, per-pupil revenue that we receive from the state and county each year, we depend on philanthropic support to fully implement our vision of providing 21st century learning in a small, nurturing environment.
Each year, Charlotte Lab School’s Board and leadership team prepare an annual operating budget and the Lab Innovation Fund helps bridge the funding gap between the public funding available and our ambitious goals. As a charter school, Charlotte Lab School receives a specified amount of public money for each enrolled child; however, we do not receive funds for land, buildings, and renovations or for complimentary lunch, after school, and transportation for students who come from economically disadvantaged households.
How important is my participation?
Very important! We ask that every family make a donation to the annual fund at a level that is personally meaningful. By making a gift to the Lab Innovation Fund, you are demonstrating your commitment to the community.
Does my gift really matter?
Yes! No gift is too small; every dollar raised helps provide an even more robust educational opportunity for our students. Thank you for making a gift at a level that feels right.
How long will the Innovation Fund campaign run?
The Innovation Fund kicks off in November each year and will wrap up by June. All gifts received between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 will count toward this year's fund.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
As a registered 501c3 organization, your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent provided by law. Donations will be recognized with a charitable gift receipt.
Will my company match my gift?
Many companies will match charitable contributions their employees give to schools thereby increasing the impact of your donation. In most cases, donors must request a match directly from the company and Charlotte Lab School will be notified of the pending match. If your company requires a charitable gift receipt before you can request the match, please contact Susannah Lund, Director of Strategy & Philanthropy.
What other fundraising activities can I expect this year?
It is important that you know what fundraising initiatives you can expect each year. The Innovation Fund will be the only fundraising campaign for operating support this fiscal year, which ends June 30. There may be some student and PTSO-led fundraising efforts during the school year as well.
Are Lab Families expected to provide all of the philanthropic dollars for the school?
No. Individuals (including lab families, board members, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends of the school) have provided approximately 46% of the philanthropic dollars raised since we opened. We have been very fortunate to receive two major national grants and gifts from several local foundations to help with our planning year, start-up costs, diversity efforts, playground construction, maker lab, and more!
We also receive corporate support and in-kind donations from many of our lab families, which help off-set operating costs and other expenses. While it is very challenging to raise annual operating support from corporate sponsors and foundations, our staff and volunteer Grants Committee continues to research and apply for grants for both operating expenditures and project/program-specific funds. If you have any ideas for grant opportunities or would like to help, please contact Susannah Lund,Head of External Affairs
Will I be recognized for my contribution? May I donate anonymously?
You will receive a letter acknowledging your gift, which can be used for tax purposes. Charlotte Lab School is a registered nonprofit organization and donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent provided by law. If you wish for your gift to remain anonymous, please indicate your preference on your gift form or by emailing Susannah Lund.
I want to designate my gift for a specific purpose. Will it count toward the Innovation Fund?
The Innovation Fund raises unrestricted funds, which allows us to direct funds to the school’s highest priorities. Please contact Susannah Lund, Head of External Affairs, to discuss your gift idea.
