Everything you need to know about transportation at Charlotte Lab School.
Any changes to a child's standards dismissal method must be made via the DAILY TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FORM prior to 2:00 pm each day. All changes must be in writing. Note: 5th and 6th graders may be released at the end of the day without a parent ONLY if you have notified the school in writing that you give Lab permission to release your child. Please contact Ms. Fulcher (lower school) or Ms. Clinch (middle school) to make arrangements.
You may drop your child off between 7:45 - 8:15 am at the lower school (ls) and 7:45 – 8:30 am at the middle school (ms). Your child will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:15 am (ls) or 8:30 (ms). During the first few weeks of school, you may walk your child to his/her classroom without signing in at the lower school ONLY. Middle School parents are encouraged to say their “goodbyes” before their child enters the building. "Independence Day” (the day we ask parents to stop entering the school in the morning) at the lower school will be Friday, September 8.
Afternoon dismissal begins at 3:30 pm at the lower school and 3:45 pm at the middle school. If you need to pick up your child early, please note that you must pick up prior to 3:00 pm. No exceptions, please.
Only if it is absolutely necessary and a parent, guardian or approved emergency contact comes to pick up the child in person, will Charlotte Lab School release a student early. In this case, the parent/emergency contact must show a valid photo ID upon entering the front office to sign out the student. Early dismissal requests must be made via the online form, found in the transportation section of our website. These requests MUST be received by the school prior to 2:00 pm. The school will not honor telephone requests or emails for early dismissal. Students must be picked up for early dismissal PRIOR to 3:00 pm in order to prevent disruption of the dismissal process for the school. If your child is leaving early on a regular basis for an enrichment activity, please contact the front office and complete an Educational Enhancement Opportunity Request Form.
Please arrive at your cluster stop 10 minutes before your scheduled time in the morning and afternoon. Eagle Bus Company will be sending you a text invitation to join “Remind,” which will be used for last minute updates to the bus schedule. Bus payments will be made directly to Eagle Bus Company, and payment arrangements will be finalized during the first week of school. Do not worry if you have not made your initial payment at this time; all students who have reserved a spot on the bus will be able to ride the first week. More information, including bus routes and stop times, can be found here.
TRANSPORTATION PICKUP CARDS
Blue Transportation Pickup Cards are required to pick up your child each afternoon for bus riders, car riders, and park and walkers at both schools. Cards were available at Meet Your Teacher Open Houses. All remaining cards will be sent home with your child on the first day of school. If you need duplicate copies, please email Office Manager Stefanny Fulcher (lower school) Lauri Clinch (middle school). Parents, guardians, or caregivers without blue pickup cards will be asked to show ID and must be listed on the Standard Dismissal Form.
FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL DISMISSAL CARDS
First week of school dismissal cards should be pinned to your child’s backpack for the first week of school so that we can quickly know your child’s dismissal plans. These cards were available at the Meet Your Teacher Open Houses and at drop off the first week of school.
LOWER SCHOOL PROCEDURES
PARK & WALK - Lower School
The student entrance will be open from 7:45 - 8:15 am for drop off, and “walkers” will be dismissed from this entrance at 3:30 pm. No students will be released without an authorized adult present, with the one exception of 5th graders who have provided written permission to the front office (firstname.lastname@example.org). The student entrance will be locked while school is in session (from 8:15 am - 3:30 pm.) Visitors, volunteers, and parents picking up during regular school hours must enter through the main visitor entrance facing 9th street.
Free, short-term parking during drop-off and pickup at the Preferred Parking lot at 422 E. 9th Street (across the street from the school on the opposite side of Brevard (aka the gravel lot.) This free parking is limited to the hours of 7:45 - 8:15 am and 3:30 - 4:00 pm. You must pay if you park at any other time.
All students must be walked to the student entrance; do not drop off your child at the street corner OR attempt to “skip” the car rider line and drop your child in any other areas. Also, please do not use the parking lot located at 300 E. 9th Street (across from our visitor entrance) for any purposes. This lot is now only used by staff, and it is heavily monitored by Preferred Parking. You will likely get a ticket.
CARPOOL LINE - Lower School
If you are picking up your child in our carpool line, you must approach the line from the north on Brevard Street. You will enter the parking lot on the right side of the street before you cross 9th Street, and your child(ren) will enter/exit the school through the playground area. Please see the map for specific directions. If you plan to use our carpool line for drop-off and pickup you must agree to the following:
Drivers should place their student’s TRANSPORTATION PICKUP CARD on the front windshield (or tuck under the passenger-side visor) so that it can be easily seen by CLS staff, who will be reporting numbers back to the staff inside the school.
MORNING DROP-OFF: Drivers should NOT line up PRIOR to 7:40 am; CLS Staff will begin unloading cars at 7:45 am
AFTERNOON PICK-UP: Drivers should NOT line up PRIOR to 3:15 pm.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROCEDURES
DROP OFF AND PICK UP
All students who are NOT bus riders or attending after school should be dropped off and picked up through the carpool line. Due to the limited space in the parking lot, parents may not park in the lot during pick-up and drop-off times (7:45 - 8:30 am and 3:15 - 4:00 pm). There is no “park and walk in” option for middle school student dismissal.
You may not make a left off 10th Street onto Seigle Ave. while traveling west (toward uptown) during carpool times. When using the carpool line, you must approach the carpool line going east on 10th street (going toward Central Ave.) and take a right onto Seigle Ave. Please take a right onto Louise Ave. to Otts St. to Seigle Ave and cross 10th Street at the light if you are traveling west on 10th Street. When leaving the school during carpool hours, you may not make a left onto 10th Street. Please make right turns only to keep traffic moving.
Drivers should place their student’s TRANSPORTATION PICKUP CARD on the front windshield (or tuck under the passenger-side visor) so that it can be easily seen by Lab staff, who will be reporting numbers back to the staff inside the school.
MORNING DROP-OFF: Drivers should NOT line up PRIOR to 7:40 am; Lab Staff will begin unloading cars at 7:45 am
AFTERNOON PICK-UP: Drivers should NOT line up PRIOR to 3:30 pm.
If you plan to walk to the school to pick up your child, you must go to the front office and sign out your child. You may also notify the school (in writing) that your child may be released without a parent or designated adult present if you wish for your child to leave the school as a walker. Please contact Ms. Clinch and send your permission in writing to make these arrangements.

Inclement Weather Policy
In the case of inclement weather, Charlotte Lab School will generally follow the same closing, delayed school opening, or early school closing decision as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). This decision will be made as early as possible and prior to 6:00 am on the day in question. Staff, parents, and students are advised to listen to information broadcasted by any of the local news and radio stations. In addition, we will send a mass phone call and/or email to all families and post any information regarding school closings on our website. In certain circumstances, Charlotte Lab School may NOT follow a CMS school closing decision if we independently determine that the weather and roads have cleared enough to resume school following a storm. In these cases, we will notify parents via phone call and/or email.
Since our regular session is from 8:15 am to 3:30 pm (lower school) and 8:30 am to 3:45 pm (middle school), school will begin two hours later on delayed opening days. This means start times will be: 10:15 am (lower school) and 10:30 am (middle school). Buses will also operate on a two-hour delay. On these days, lunch will occur at the regularly scheduled hour. In addition, all field trips and special events will be cancelled.
