Paola Pilonieta is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Reading Education Minor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Paola received her Doctorate and Master's degrees in Reading from the University of Miami. Prior to her current position, she was a first-grade teacher in Miami, Florida. Paola's research agenda focuses on emergent and early literacy, diversity, and teacher education. She is particularly interested in exploring how young children construct meaning during read alouds and partner reading, and how comprehension strategies can be used to facilitate text-based conversations. In the area of teacher education, Paola is currently exploring how preservice teachers implement High Leverage Practices through Practice Based Education. Paola has authored over 30 publications and has delivered more than 35 conference presentations and workshops.

Paola has lived in Charlotte since 2007 and enjoys the all the city has to offer with her son, Gabriel, and their dog
