Lab Upper School

Charlotte Lab Upper and Middle School uses a relationship-focused approach, crucial to the middle grades age group, to offer relevant and authentic learning opportunities designed to help students in grades 6 - 9 find their voices and passions while building out their academic foundation for future success. Our personalized methods of teaching and learning foster spaces where failures are celebrated steps on the learning journey, filled with student-choice, that allow students to lean into independence with built-in support throughout their middle and high school grades years.
Through our advisory program, we create a sense of belonging and social-emotional wellbeing that is just as important as academic skills. Through mentorship, student-led conferences, and leadership programs like the Student Government Association and Youth Advisory Board, we provide scaffolded supports to help students develop the executive functioning and leadership skills that can shift their trajectory through their secondary schooling experience.
Every member of our community is valued, seen, heard, and challenged to grow. You and your family have a welcomed place at Lab. We each belong here. We actively work to make space for all voices with our weighted lottery, implementation of restorative and culture-building practices, and our commitment to our anti-biased, anti-racist development.
Charlotte Lab Upper and Middle School is a place where all students can and will learn at high levels with teachers who understand the importance of forming relationships and ensuring students are noticed, known, and recognized. Learning at Lab Middle includes collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and relevance and authenticity to our community. Students are offered opportunities to take chances, make mistakes, and learn through our workshop model teaching approach, interdisciplinary and challenge-based Quests, and guided internships.
