Biasia Sparks
Quest, Grade 2 (LS)

Biasia Sparks was born in Paterson, NJ but grew up in Charlotte. Ms. Sparks earned her undergraduate degree in Child and Family Services at Benedict College in Columbia, SC. Ms. Sparks initially had hopes of pursuing law prior to attending college.
In 2010, a professor encouraged her to look up Marian Wright Edelman and the Children’s Defense Fund since she had a lot of curiosity about educational policies. While serving as a Servant Leader Intern with Freedom Schools, she quickly realized it changed her life and led to her changing her major and passion to education.
After college, in 2013 Ms. Sparks was a founding Corps Member in Jacksonville, FL with City Year, where she taught ninth grade. Through City Year AmeriCorps, Ms. Sparks was able to prepare students not only academically, but also cater to their with the social emotional skills and mindsets to succeed in school and in life. In addition, she was also able to acquire valuable skills to help and enhance leadership in her community and future career path.
She later went on to complete her first masters and teaching certification at UNC-Charlotte in Elementary Education K-6th, and has now taught for seven years in a variety of charter and public schools in Charlotte. Ms. Sparks has taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. Most recently she won Teacher of the Year in 2019, within the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system.
This past May she received her Masters in Educational Leadership K-12 and principal licensure from Queens University and was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi. Ms. Sparks has hopes of moving into school leadership and eventually founding her own charter school in her hometown.
When she is not at a chapter meeting or community service event with her sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., she is working with her teens at the YMCA Level Up program, volunteering with the local Black Political Caucus chapter in Charlotte or spending time with her only child (her dog Ivy). She is excited to join the Charlotte Lab family this school year and is looking forward to growing more professionally.
