Lab News

7/9/2018

Hello from Charlotte Lab School

Picture
Dear Families:

We hope that you are enjoying the first few weeks of your summer. We have been busy closing out the 2017-2018 year and getting ready for 2018-2019 -- our fourth year! There are two ways that we would LOVE to have your help:
  1. or Returning Families Only: Please take a moment to provide Advisory preferences for all of your children for the 2018-2019 school year by completing the Advisory Preference Survey.
  2. Make sure that your children continue to learn this summer! If you're already hearing "I'm bored," don't forget to encourage your children to take on a Summer Challenge and complete their Summer Reading! We'd love to hear and see what your creative children are up to, so please post pictures and videos via Twitter, Instagram or Facebook and tag them with #cltlabway and #labsummerchallenge.

Finally, take a look at the upcoming events, deadlines, and activities below. And, have a wonderful few weeks ahead! We will be in touch again in early August with a list of new faculty, teaching assignments, more school-wide updates, after school information, and details for back-to-school.

Sincerely,
Mary Moss Brown
Head of School

CHANGES TO ACADEMIC CALENDAR
Please review the updated 2018-2019 academic calendar. The Middle School bell will be at 8:20 am and two half days have been added on December 12 and March 20.

HELP US FUND A WATER BOTTLE FILLING STATION FOR THE LOWER SCHOOL
Ms. Fernandez just posted a project to Donor's Choose to get a water bottle filling station and drinking fountain for the Lower School. This project will benefit all k-5 students by ensuring that they have access to refrigerated, filtered water all day long. When students are hydrated, their focus improves and learning becomes easier. Plus, we'll be helping the environment by reducing waste from disposable plastic water bottles. All donations made within the next week will be matched up to $50 by Donors Choose with promo code RIPPLE. Please consider making a donation today!

LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER PLAYDATES
Do your kids miss their Lab classmates? Are they excited to make some new friends? Help us welcome new Lab families and reconnect with old friends at our Lab Lower School playdates. Stop by the Spirit Wear table at each event to purchase t-shirts, water bottles, and many other items to show off your Charlotte Lab School pride (cash only). All events are weather permitting.
  • K-5 Lab Playground Playdate - Saturday, July 14 from 10-11:30am at Lab Lower School Playground (301 E. 9th Street)
  • K-5 First Ward Park & Sprayground Playdate - Saturday, August 11 from 10:30am-12:30pm at First Ward Park & Spraygrounds, located across from Lab Lower School. Parking at meters along N. Brevard Street is free on the weekends.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GET TOGETHER
Welcome to middle school! Please join us on Sunday, July 29 from 3-4:30pm for a get together for middle school students and parents at Freedom Park. Meet by the train at Freedom Park.

LAST CALL FOR EDUKIT ORDERS
Last call for Edukit orders! This is the most convenient way to be sure you get everything needed to start the school year off right. Kits ordered from now through August 5 will be delivered to your home. If you choose to purchase supplies on your own, please stick to the items listed per grade, especially folder and composition book colors. These lists were created by the teachers and have thought behind them (ex. Red folders will be used for ELA). Itemized lists can be found on the Edukit website; select ‘Download Kit Contents’ from the Charlotte Lab School page. Please contact Jaime Rentch with any questions.

IMMUNIZATIONS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING 7TH GRADE
North Carolina requires vaccine records to be updated for students entering the 7th grade. Before your child entered Kindergarten, he or she most likely received all required immunizations except for the Tdap booster and Meningococcal conjugate. If your student has had a well check this year, they may have already received the needed vaccinations. The state requires us to have an updated copy of immunization records for students entering the 7th grade. You will have 30 calendar days from the first day of school to provide the required up-to-date immunization record for your child. Vaccination requirements for 7th-grade-age children can be found here.

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHTS - NOTE TIME UPDATES

Each camp runs from 9am-4pm featuring drama, art and music activities. Camps take place at Imaginon. For exact dates and more information visit the Children's Theatre website.
