Community as Our Classroom

Since opening in 2015, Charlotte Lab School has believed in and encouraged the idea of community as classroom. This means that we take advantage of our location near Center City to the full extent using the city as an extension of the classroom.

Our middle and upper school students participate in internships at organizations located throughout Uptown Charlotte and in our Bryant Park neighborhood. There are also internships within the school where older students have the opportunity to work with lower school students and become champions of The Lab Way. Lab lower school students experience the community through thoughtfully planned field trips, outings, and campus visits from organizations representing various fields of study.

While we love taking field trips into Charlotte to see all that our city has to offer, we also enjoy when local organizations come to visit us!

Through our partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, MoLi, the mobile library makes a stop at our campus every few weeks. Every Lab student is granted a library card through their ONE Access program.

Charlotte Lab School has an ongoing partnership with Discovery Place Science. Lab students have visited popular exhibits, conducted experiments in the Discovery Place science lab, and hosted guests from Discovery Place in our classrooms. The photos below are from a recent hands-on Animal Exploration lesson our 3rd graders enjoyed.

Our high schoolers play an integral role with various businesses and organizations around Charlotte. We are proud to say that 100% of our HS students are enrolled in a co-curricular program through Quest, and over 40% of HS students participate in a community-based internship each school year.

Consider joining us at Lab and partnering with a High School student through an internship and mentorship experience. Invest in the future workforce and help us continue reimagining what's possible in public education.
